Chicago Public Schools Vision Program Chooses Classic Optical To Improve On-Site Eyeglass Delivery System

Earlier this year, Chicago Public Schools (CPS) Vision Program chose Classic Optical to improve its on-site eyeglass delivery system to correct students’ vision problems and equip them for success in school and in life. On June 4th this innovative vision care model for CPS students reached a milestone as the program dispensed its 50,000th pair of eyeglasses. Classic Optical Laboratories, Inc. (Classic Optical) is helping to change lives and improve learning for Chicago Public School (CPS) children through an innovative partnership with the Essilor Vision Foundation (EVF) and Modern Optical International (Modern Optical), delivering the most precious gift — vision. Recognizing that vision deficiencies are a barrier to learning, in 2014, the CPS Office of Student Health and Wellness (OSHW) issued an RFI to search for an Optical Lab Partner that could provide quality eyeglasses to all CPS students in need. Furthermore, they sought a Lab that could establish an efficient delivery system, as well as ensure rapid turnaround on the prescribed eyewear. Classic Optical, one of the nation’s preeminent ophthalmic fabrication laboratories, met all the specified criteria and was selected...

What is your Lab IQ?

What is your Lab IQ?

Judy Canty once wrote a sage article about taking charge of your own destiny entitled “The Sky is NOT Falling.” She noted that in response to all the noise about a recessionary economy, some practices are motivated to advertise more, and about the same percentage are motivated to advertise less. As with advertising, there are at least two trains of thought about getting the most bang for your buck when choosing an Optical Laboratory. One type of practice is on a continual search for the best price on every item. They search the market looking for specials and throughout the year divide their business differently among the many labs that they use. These practices may pay lab bills that total $5,000 a month, but each lab they use knows them as a $300-$1,000 a month customer. Another practice takes that same monthly $5,000, which adds up to $60,000 of business a year, and places it with one laboratory. The practice makes a concerted effort to build personal relationships with the personnel of that lab: their salesman, a Customer Service Representative (CSR), and that lab’s management. In response to their business volume and loyalty, they are often receiving better prices...

As part of the tour, elementary school students will receive examinations and vision screenings, and those in need of glasses can select their own frames to be delivered the same day or within a few weeks, depending on the complexity of the prescription. The mobile tour departed from Dallas, on October 6, 2014, and will make its final stop in Memphis, Tenn., on November 16, 2014. “We are continuously looking for innovative ways to spread our message and build awareness about the strong connection between healthy vision and education,” said Stephen Shawler, president, Essilor Vision Foundation. “The mobile tour not only helps us achieve that goal, but also allows us to expand our services to additional cities around...

Hoya’s Confidence in the US Independent Eye Care Market Stimulates 3 Year Investment Strategy

Hoya’s Confidence in the US Independent Eye Care Market Stimulates 3 Year Investment Strategy

The plan for Hoya Vision Care to invest heavily in the area of lens production and manufacturing was set into motion early 2013 due to accelerated growth expectations experienced in the US market. Year 1 of the 5 year plan calls for a $15M Intercompany Manufacturing Center (IMC) incorporating revolutionary lens manufacturing and processing equipment. The IMC will process its first lens in January 2015. Mike Dougher, VP of Operations commented…. “Lead time required for delivery of next generation processing technology and robotic automation is at a minimum 16 months, not to mention the logistics designing the most efficient lab structure imaginable. The initial planning and orders for state‐of the‐art processing and AR equipment started in January, 2013” Increased efficiencies will have a positive impact and enhance the entire Hoya production model across the country. The 100,000 square foot facility will run 24/7….365 days per year. Barney Dougher, Hoya Vision Care North American President stated… “The reason for the investment is really very simple and boils down to the fact that we believe in the US Independent Eye Care market and have an unwavering degree of confidence...

Essilor Announces Mobile App To Provide Credible Eye Health Information, Encourage Eye Exams

In response to growing demand for timely, reliable eyecare information online, Essilor of America announces the development of a new mobile application for consumers. Once launched, the AskAboutEyes app will help consumers find relevant information on individual issues or concerns about their eyes prior to visiting their eyecare practitioner (ECP). While only 3.5 percent of eyewear is purchased online today, nearly 40 percent of consumers reportedly search the web for information prior to visiting an eye care practitioner. Because of the specialized nature of eye care, there remain very few trusted and credible options for consumers seeking information on vision and vision correction, even among traditional medical resource websites. “We at Essilor know that a trained eyecare practitioner is the only way to get accurate recommendations for vision correction options, as well as the diagnosis and treatment of any eye condition or disease, but we also recognize that many consumers like to feel informed and prepared before meeting with an eyecare professional,” said Howard Purcell, OD, FAAO, Dipl., senior vice president customer development, Essilor of America. “The AskAboutEyes app...
