Hoya’s Confidence in the US Independent Eye Care Market Stimulates 3 Year Investment Strategy

The plan for Hoya Vision Care to invest heavily in the area of lens production and manufacturing was set into motion early 2013 due to accelerated growth expectations experienced in the US market. Year 1 of the 5 year plan calls for a $15M Intercompany Manufacturing Center (IMC) incorporating revolutionary lens manufacturing and processing equipment. The IMC will process its first lens in January 2015. Mike Dougher, VP of Operations commented…. “Lead time required for delivery of next generation processing technology and robotic automation is at a minimum 16 months, not to mention the logistics designing the most efficient lab structure imaginable. The initial planning and orders for state‐of the‐art processing and AR equipment started in January, 2013” Increased efficiencies will have a positive impact and enhance the entire Hoya production model across the country. The 100,000 square foot facility will run 24/7….365 days per year. Barney Dougher, Hoya Vision Care North American President stated… “The reason for the investment is really very simple and boils down to the fact that we believe in the US Independent Eye Care market and have an unwavering degree of confidence...

Essilor Announces Mobile App To Provide Credible Eye Health Information, Encourage Eye Exams

Essilor Announces Mobile App To Provide Credible Eye Health Information, Encourage Eye Exams

In response to growing demand for timely, reliable eyecare information online, Essilor of America announces the development of a new mobile application for consumers. Once launched, the AskAboutEyes app will help consumers find relevant information on individual issues or concerns about their eyes prior to visiting their eyecare practitioner (ECP). While only 3.5 percent of eyewear is purchased online today, nearly 40 percent of consumers reportedly search the web for information prior to visiting an eye care practitioner. Because of the specialized nature of eye care, there remain very few trusted and credible options for consumers seeking information on vision and vision correction, even among traditional medical resource websites. “We at Essilor know that a trained eyecare practitioner is the only way to get accurate recommendations for vision correction options, as well as the diagnosis and treatment of any eye condition or disease, but we also recognize that many consumers like to feel informed and prepared before meeting with an eyecare professional,” said Howard Purcell, OD, FAAO, Dipl., senior vice president customer development, Essilor of America. “The AskAboutEyes app...

Crizal Prevencia Kids No-Glare Lenses Now Available On VSP Formulary

Crizal Prevencia Kids No-Glare Lenses Now Available On VSP Formulary

Just in time for the back-to-school season, Essilor’s groundbreaking Crizal® Prevencia™ Kids No-Glare lenses are now available on managed vision care plans offered by VSP. Crizal Prevencia Kids are the first No-Glare lens specially designed for children to selectively block harmful blue light and UV while allowing beneficial light to reach their eyes. Some light is, of course, necessary for children’s vision. Blue-turquoise light helps kids see more clearly, regulates their sleep cycles and supports healthy memory, mood and brain functions. This makes the selective filtering protection of Crizal Prevencia Kids No-Glare lenses essential. “Children are more vulnerable to the dangers of light, and at home and school, kids are exposed to more blue light from television, computers, video games and digital devices than ever before,” said Howard Purcell, O.D., F.A.A.O., Dipl., and senior vice president of customer development, Essilor of America. “We’ve worked closely with managed care providers to enhance children’s access to the Crizal Prevencia Kids technology, because we recognize how important this superior protection is for the healthy development of their eyesight,...

Crizal Prevencia No-Glare Lenses Now Available on VSP Formulary

Crizal Prevencia No-Glare Lenses Now Available on VSP Formulary

After successfully launching as the first lenses to offer selective filtering protection against harmful blue light, Essilor’s award-winning Crizal® Prevencia™ No-Glare lenses are now available on managed vision care plans offered by VSP. While certain types of light are essential to vision, other types can be damaging. UV light is a major risk factor for serious eye diseases like cataracts. Blue-violet light is a major risk factor in the onset of age-related macular degeneration, the leading cause of severe vision loss and legal blindness in adults older than 60. It is important, however, to not block all blue light to the eyes because blue-turquoise light is beneficial, supporting healthy sleep cycles, memory and cognitive function. Crizal Prevencia No-Glare lenses are designed to selectively filter out harmful blue-violet and UV light while letting beneficial blue-turquoise light pass through. “We’re proud of the success of Crizal Prevencia lenses and have worked closely with managed care providers to ensure the groundbreaking technology is more accessible to our ECP’s and all of the patients they serve,” said Howard Purcell, O.D., F.A.A.O., Dipl., and senior vice...

Varilux Progressive Lens Inventor Honored for his Contribution to Vision Health

Bernard Maitenaz, inventor of the progressive lens and Chairman and CEO of Essilor from 1980-1991, was presented with the prestigious Apollo Award at this year’s 117th Annual American Optometric Association (AOA) Congress. The Apollo Award honors individuals or organizations for distinguished service to the visual welfare of the public. This year’s award not only pays tribute to Maitenaz but also to the groundbreaking nature of the innovation behind progressive lenses – both today and in the past. In 1959, following eight years of research, Maitenaz, a young mechanical engineer at Essilor in France, created Varilux®, the world’s first progressive lens. Since then Varilux lenses have gone on to set the standard of visual comfort for people with presbyopia by providing seamless vision at all distances. Presbyopia is the most widespread vision problem in the world – affecting everyone over the age of 45 regardless of location, health or economic circumstance; yet more than 50 percent of people with presbyopia across the world do not benefit from glasses or adequate correction. By 2020, it’s estimated that 2.3 billion people will have presbyopia. In 2012, in its continued mission...
