Essilor, the world’s leading ophthalmic optics company, announces the creation of the Vision For Life program, a pioneering step in the company’s mission to improve lives by improving sight. The Group has committed 30 million Euros to this initiative, making it the largest global strategic giving program dedicated to eliminating Uncorrected Refractive Error (URE). URE, or poor vision, is the most common disability in the world, and an estimated 2.5 billion people do not have the vision correction they need. Visual impairment has significant social and economic repercussions – the latter calculated to be worth as much as USD 272 billion in lost global productivity1 per year. Vision For Life is a strategic giving program that aims to accelerate initiatives targeting poor vision through awareness-raising, capacity-building and the creation of basic vision care infrastructure. The sustainable development of local vision care will create jobs, help alleviate poverty and bring socio-economic development to individuals and the communities in which they live. “The launch of the Vision For Life program is a natural sequel to the creation of our Corporate Mission division in 2013 and...

What is your Lab IQ?

What is your Lab IQ?

Judy Canty once wrote a sage article about taking charge of your own destiny entitled “The Sky is NOT Falling.” She noted that in response to all the noise about a recessionary economy, some practices are motivated to advertise more, and about the same percentage are motivated to advertise less. As with advertising, there are at least two trains of thought about getting the most bang for your buck when choosing an Optical Laboratory. One type of practice is on a continual search for the best price on every item. They search the market looking for specials and throughout the year divide their business differently among the many labs that they use. These practices may pay lab bills that total $5,000 a month, but each lab they use knows them as a $300-$1,000 a month customer. Another practice takes that same monthly $5,000, which adds up to $60,000 of business a year, and places it with one laboratory. The practice makes a concerted effort to build personal relationships with the personnel of that lab: their salesman, a Customer Service Representative (CSR), and that lab’s management. In response to their business volume and loyalty, they are often receiving better prices...

Kids Vision For Life Kicks Off Nationwide Mobile Clinic Tour Focusing On Eye Care For Kids In Need

As part of its ongoing commitment to eliminating poor vision and its lifelong consequences, today Kids Vision for Life announced that it is taking its values and vision to 12 cities around the country as part of a nationwide mobile clinic tour. The nationwide tour is all part of an effort to build awareness within various communities among parents and educators and their elected officials, while providing vision services to students in need at no cost to the families. As part of the tour, elementary school students will receive examinations and vision screenings, and those in need of glasses can select their own frames to be delivered the same day or within a few weeks, depending on the complexity of the prescription. The mobile tour departed from Dallas, on October 6, 2014, and will make its final stop in Memphis, Tenn., on November 16, 2014. “We are continuously looking for innovative ways to spread our message and build awareness about the strong connection between healthy vision and education,” said Stephen Shawler, president, Essilor Vision Foundation. “The mobile tour not only helps us achieve that goal, but also allows us to expand our services to additional cities around...

Hoya’s Confidence in the US Independent Eye Care Market Stimulates 3 Year Investment Strategy

Hoya’s Confidence in the US Independent Eye Care Market Stimulates 3 Year Investment Strategy

The plan for Hoya Vision Care to invest heavily in the area of lens production and manufacturing was set into motion early 2013 due to accelerated growth expectations experienced in the US market. Year 1 of the 5 year plan calls for a $15M Intercompany Manufacturing Center (IMC) incorporating revolutionary lens manufacturing and processing equipment. The IMC will process its first lens in January 2015. Mike Dougher, VP of Operations commented…. “Lead time required for delivery of next generation processing technology and robotic automation is at a minimum 16 months, not to mention the logistics designing the most efficient lab structure imaginable. The initial planning and orders for state‐of the‐art processing and AR equipment started in January, 2013” Increased efficiencies will have a positive impact and enhance the entire Hoya production model across the country. The 100,000 square foot facility will run 24/7….365 days per year. Barney Dougher, Hoya Vision Care North American President stated… “The reason for the investment is really very simple and boils down to the fact that we believe in the US Independent Eye Care market and have an unwavering degree of confidence...

Essilor Announces Mobile App To Provide Credible Eye Health Information, Encourage Eye Exams

Essilor Announces Mobile App To Provide Credible Eye Health Information, Encourage Eye Exams

In response to growing demand for timely, reliable eyecare information online, Essilor of America announces the development of a new mobile application for consumers. Once launched, the AskAboutEyes app will help consumers find relevant information on individual issues or concerns about their eyes prior to visiting their eyecare practitioner (ECP). While only 3.5 percent of eyewear is purchased online today, nearly 40 percent of consumers reportedly search the web for information prior to visiting an eye care practitioner. Because of the specialized nature of eye care, there remain very few trusted and credible options for consumers seeking information on vision and vision correction, even among traditional medical resource websites. “We at Essilor know that a trained eyecare practitioner is the only way to get accurate recommendations for vision correction options, as well as the diagnosis and treatment of any eye condition or disease, but we also recognize that many consumers like to feel informed and prepared before meeting with an eyecare professional,” said Howard Purcell, OD, FAAO, Dipl., senior vice president customer development, Essilor of America. “The AskAboutEyes app...

Through mobile clinics in schools, vision fests at central locations, and special events, Kids Vision for Life provides vision services to in-need students across the U.S. at no cost to the families. “Every day, we learn more about the critical connection between strong, healthy vision and a student’s educational experience,” said Stephen Shawler, president of Essilor Vision Foundation. “Research shows that 25 percent of U.S. school children have a vision problem significant enough to affect learning, a statistic...

Crizal Prevencia Kids No-Glare Lenses Now Available On VSP Formulary

Just in time for the back-to-school season, Essilor’s groundbreaking Crizal® Prevencia™ Kids No-Glare lenses are now available on managed vision care plans offered by VSP. Crizal Prevencia Kids are the first No-Glare lens specially designed for children to selectively block harmful blue light and UV while allowing beneficial light to reach their eyes. Some light is, of course, necessary for children’s vision. Blue-turquoise light helps kids see more clearly, regulates their sleep cycles and supports healthy memory, mood and brain functions. This makes the selective filtering protection of Crizal Prevencia Kids No-Glare lenses essential. “Children are more vulnerable to the dangers of light, and at home and school, kids are exposed to more blue light from television, computers, video games and digital devices than ever before,” said Howard Purcell, O.D., F.A.A.O., Dipl., and senior vice president of customer development, Essilor of America. “We’ve worked closely with managed care providers to enhance children’s access to the Crizal Prevencia Kids technology, because we recognize how important this superior protection is for the healthy development of their eyesight,...

Crizal Prevencia No-Glare Lenses Now Available on VSP Formulary

After successfully launching as the first lenses to offer selective filtering protection against harmful blue light, Essilor’s award-winning Crizal® Prevencia™ No-Glare lenses are now available on managed vision care plans offered by VSP. While certain types of light are essential to vision, other types can be damaging. UV light is a major risk factor for serious eye diseases like cataracts. Blue-violet light is a major risk factor in the onset of age-related macular degeneration, the leading cause of severe vision loss and legal blindness in adults older than 60. It is important, however, to not block all blue light to the eyes because blue-turquoise light is beneficial, supporting healthy sleep cycles, memory and cognitive function. Crizal Prevencia No-Glare lenses are designed to selectively filter out harmful blue-violet and UV light while letting beneficial blue-turquoise light pass through. “We’re proud of the success of Crizal Prevencia lenses and have worked closely with managed care providers to ensure the groundbreaking technology is more accessible to our ECP’s and all of the patients they serve,” said Howard Purcell, O.D., F.A.A.O., Dipl., and senior vice...
