Kids Vision for Life Receives $50K Donation Through Social Media Campaign

As part of its ongoing commitment to eliminating poor vision and its lifelong consequences, Kids Vision for Life has teamed with spokeswoman Jennie Garth and Alcon’s THE eyeSOLUTION™ for its “Get an A+ in Eye Care” campaign. Through the initiative, which works to educate families about the importance of vision health as they prepare for the new school year, Alcon is donating $50,000 to Kids Vision for Life after receiving 50,000 “likes” on THE eyeSOLUTION Facebook page. Launched in 2008 by the Essilor Vision Foundation, Kids Vision for Life is a cost-effective approach that aims to remove poor vision as a barrier to children learning at their full capacity. Through mobile clinics in schools, vision fests at central locations, and special events, Kids Vision for Life provides vision services to in-need students across the U.S. at no cost to the families. “Every day, we learn more about the critical connection between strong, healthy vision and a student’s educational experience,” said Stephen Shawler, president of Essilor Vision Foundation. “Research shows that 25 percent of U.S. school children have a vision problem significant enough to affect learning, a statistic...

A Legacy Tribute: Kirby Puckett Eye Mobile

A Legacy Tribute: Kirby Puckett Eye Mobile

At the Minneapolis Convention Center on July 11th, Ogi Eyewear witnessed first hand the ribbon cutting ceremony of the Kirby Puckett Eye Mobile. On that day, The Phillips Eye Institute and Major League Baseball and the Minnesota Twins proudly introduced the Kirby Puckett Eye Mobile, the first ever eye clinic on wheels in the Twin Cities region. This will provide follow-up eye care for children referred through the Phillips Eye Institute’s Early Youth Eyecare (E.Y.E.) Program and will also provide free vision screening for children and adults around the state. With two fully equipped exam rooms provided, it truly is like an eye doctor’s office on wheels. This vehicle is operated and staffed by Phillip’s Eye Institute, part of Allina Health. Last year Ogi Eyewear donated over 500 frames to the Phillips Eye Institute’s E.Y.E. program. Children in the Minneapolis Public Schools were screened and many had the opportunity to receive a free pair of prescription eyeglasses through this program. Now, with the introduction of the Kirby Puckett Eye Mobile, Ogi Eyewear will once again donate frames to this new philanthropic effort to provide the local community with eyeglasses. Learn more...

How to Adopt the Affordable Care Act in Your Practice

How to Adopt the Affordable Care Act in Your Practice

By Bryan M. Rogoff, OD, MBA, CPHM The US government’s effort to increase the quality and affordability of health care, while decreasing the costs and protecting consumers, has been extremely political and highly criticized. Even after March 23, 2010, when President Obama signed the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (ACA) into law, the matter was hardly settled. Indeed, the questions and confusion had only just begun. Lawmakers, providers, patients and managed care companies have been scrambling to prepare for the biggest overhaul in health care since 1965, when Medicare and Medicaid were introduced. As recently as a couple months ago, President Obama and the Department of Health and Human Services came under fire for the initiative’s poorly functioning website, HealthCare.gov. Despite a rocky start, the program is picking up steam—as of January 1, more than 2.1 million Americans had enrolled for coverage. And, before HealthCare.gov even launched, Americans were already benefiting from the early provisions of the ACA: • Young adults under 26 years of age can remain on their parents’ health care plan. • Children with pre-existing conditions can’t be denied coverage. •...

Prevent Blindness America and Wiley X Focus Attention on Preventing Workplace Accidents and Eye Injuries

Each year in March, Prevent Blindness America (www.preventblindness.org) makes a nationwide effort to focus attention on the important issue of workplace eye injuries and educate the American workforce about the tools and techniques that could help prevent the estimated 700,000 injuries that occur annually. And each year, leading protective eyewear manufacturer Wiley X is right there, offering its support and outreach for Workplace Eye Wellness Month. “Workplace eye injuries are a serious issue that can result in great personal tragedy, including the permanent loss of one’s sight,” said Wiley X Co-Owner Myles Freeman, Jr. “In addition, these accidents cost American businesses greatly, both financially and in terms of lost productivity. The hard truth is that nine out of 10 workplace eye injuries could be prevented, simply by wearing the right safety glasses at all times,” added Freeman. With such a simple solution and so much at stake, preventing workplace eye injuries is an issue that Wiley X takes very seriously. “The reasons workers give for not wearing protective eyewear — lack of comfort and style and interference with job duties, etc. — are absurd when you consider...
