Varilux Progressive Lens Inventor Honored for his Contribution to Vision Health

Bernard Maitenaz, inventor of the progressive lens and Chairman and CEO of Essilor from 1980-1991, was presented with the prestigious Apollo Award at this year’s 117th Annual American Optometric Association (AOA) Congress. The Apollo Award honors individuals or organizations for distinguished service to the visual welfare of the public. This year’s award not only pays tribute to Maitenaz but also to the groundbreaking nature of the innovation behind progressive lenses – both today and in the past. In 1959, following eight years of research, Maitenaz, a young mechanical engineer at Essilor in France, created Varilux®, the world’s first progressive lens. Since then Varilux lenses have gone on to set the standard of visual comfort for people with presbyopia by providing seamless vision at all distances. …And It’s A Tie At The 2013 Varilux Optometry Student Bowl!

Essilor of America, the nation’s leading manufacturer of optical lenses, celebrated the 22nd anniversary of the crowd-favorite Varilux Optometry Student Bowl™, held at this year’s Optometry’s Meeting in San Diego. Students showed up with signs, war chants, and matching t-shirts to cheer on the contestant representing their specific school. A student representative from all schools and colleges of optometry answered optometry-related questions while their peers cheered them on. For the first time in event history a tie for first place was declared between David Zimmerman, representing the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB), and Blake Dornstauder, representing Nova Southwestern University. Judges came prepared for the unlikely instance of a tie and planned to present the two contestants with a tie-breaker question. At the request of Zimmerman and Dornstauder, the tie-breaker question was omitted allowing the two contestants to share the honor of winning first place at the coveted event. This year, 19 students were awarded $1,000 each in grant money from Varilux, and from those winners, one national award was given. The honor of the 2012 national award belongs to Jenna Liechty, a fourth year student from Indiana University College of Optometry in Bloomington, Ind. Dallas (October 31, 2011) — A recent survey commissioned by Essilor of America, the leader in eyeglass lenses, revealed the situations where eyeglass wearers find it a problem to have foggy glasses. To help four-eyed consumers see their best, Essilor has unveiled lenses with Optifog™ technology, an exclusive anti-fog property. These lenses offer the best and most durable protection against foggy vision and are available through eyecare providers. It’s no surprise that 78% of glasses wearers found foggy lenses most annoying when moving from indoor to outdoor temperatures, but interestingly enough, the survey found the most troublesome activities are common everyday tasks: cooking (52%) and bath time (40%). Other problematic situations include: playing sports and exercising outdoors (16%), driving (16%), working out in a gym (8%), when at work (7%) and hunting (3%). The survey revealed nearly half of glasses wearers (45%) find foggy glasses a problem. The survey also revealed safety issues as an alarming three in five (59%) reported feeling unsafe with foggy glasses when driving.
